I am trying to help a friend set up a broadband connection which can be used by a beige G3 (OS 8.6) and a PC (unspecified). The two computers are side by side and remote from telephone connections. The building is old, so adding new wiring is a daunting prospect, a wireless connection seems to be the obvious answer. I can fit a wireless router adjacent to the incoming telephone connection (possibly with a few spare Ethernet ports, in case the computers ever move to that end of the building), but I am uncertain of how to connect the computers at the other end of the system.

The G3 will take a PCI wireless card, but the vendors of these things seem to be wonderfully vague about whether any drivers are available for OS 8.6 - some say 'Mac OS', but then never refer to anything but OSX. The other alternative seems to be some sort of Ethernet hub, which can pick up the wireless signal and connect by wire to the Ethernet ports of the G3 and the PC. Only one of the two computers will be in use at any one time, so congestion on the shared wirelss link is not likely to be a problem. If I went for the Ethernet hub solution, what am I looking for? A search seems to find plenty of devices which go on the ADSL end of the system, but nothing that appears to be intended for the computer end of things. Would a pair of similar routers be adaptable so as to talk to each other, one being the ADSL connection and the other being the outstation?

If you only use one computer at a time, you could simply unplug the computer not in use and swap the ethernet cable over. Alternatively, buy a ethernet switch so both are plugged in at the same time.
